Florence. 1348…
The bubonic plague…
10 days, 10 themes, 100 stories…
A trip outside town, away from the town, out of town, a getaway…
placed his narratives on the lips of a handful of people who fled plague-ridden Florence to save themselves. The structure of “The Decameron” has been aptly compared to a Romanesque colonnade, where the arches and pillars are all identical in parameters, but on a closer look, the capitals are discernibly distinct from one another, as is the ornamentation on each of the slender columns.

Keeping in mind that Boccaccio intended the book to be read chiefly by women - “the fair sex” - whose fortunes have been particularly dear to the author, TERAZ POLIŻ actresses presented their own idiosyncratic take on the stories and protagonists at hand. The production offers a play on all that is commonly considered masculine, feminine, and animal. The group’s dramatic piece takes on stereotypes, and on what we perceive as either familiar or peculiar. It’s a queer tug of war between subjects and objects, between animals and people, between the living and the dead, as the actresses embrace an entire gamut of theatrical tools they have at their disposal.

Many days, many themes, many stories... by those who escaped from the plague.

The DECAMERON Project offered high-school students a part in the process of producing the play. The project allowed youth to attend both rehearsals and workshops run by theatre artists, ranging from actresses, through the director, the scriptwriter, the composer to the photographer. This formula presented the youth an opportunity to explore the backstage life of theatre and have hands-on experience on what goes around in a theatre before the production sees the light of day. They could see for themselves what they like about theatre the most and what doesn’t attract their interest. And what is most important, the youth had their say in the final outcome of the play by taking part in discussions and workshops, alongside being able to express their opinions and offering up their own ideas. A performing art intro co-authored by the youth accompanied the autumn stagings (October 2011) of the production at the Brave New World Culture Center in Warsaw. The piece was produced under the supervision of Sebastian Świąder and Karolina Krawczyk from the Theater Educators' Association [Stowarzyszenie Pedagogów Teatru].
